As young folks embraced it, conservative forces saw the music as a desmadre, an offensive lower-class slang word for chaos. But it couldnt be stopped, and rock mania hit a peak in 1957 when Mexico City hosted its first Rock n Roll Festival, starring Elvis Presley. Still, the incident led to an Elvis boycott and public sentiment against rock music. That ushered in Mexicos grand era of rocanrol, from 1959 to 1964. The student eruptions in 1968, the massacre at Tlatelolco and Mexicos Woodstock -- the 1971 Avandaro Rock Festival -- set a course that was hard to change. Theres a government that hasnt shifted power in over 60 years. Yet the Zapatistas find a hidden Mexico, an indigenous people isolated in the forests, not just in Chiapas but throughout the country. It was an experimental break for Cafe Tacuba to refresh itself and develop new approaches to its music. As the musicians began to lay down tracks, they saw an instrumental album emerging, but WEA Latina considered that too difficult to market. Now the instrumental record is generating more positive interest, and our fans are realizing this duality were exploring between songs and more abstract instrumental ideas. It just happened.
